An unusual [4 + 4] cycloadduct from an o-quinodimethane: Characterisation and computational studies

Trapping of a pyrimidinone-derived o-quinodimethane with tetraphenylcyclopentadienone gives a mixture of the [4 + 2] and formal [4 + 4] adducts. Computational studies show that the latter arises by a sequence of [4 + 2] cycloaddition, homolysis, radical recombination to a spiro-tetrahydrofuran and Claisen rearrangement under the thermolytic conditions.     

Intrinsic echolocation capability of Hector's dolphin, Cephalorhynchus hectori.

A sonar system's echolocation capabilities can be inferred from the ambiguity distribution (defined here in terms of the conventional signal response function) of each of its transmitted signals. Several records of sounds emitted by Hector's dolphin are analyzed. The computed ambiguity distributions indicate that the sonar clicks of Hector's dolphins should be capable of resolving the ranges of targets as close together as 2 cm apart, but that target velocities cannot be resolved to any useful degree from a single echo.     

Speckle metrology employing LCTV spatial light modulators

Liquid crystal televisions have been employed as spatial light modulators in a variety of optical image processing applications. We have used such devices to develop techniques in speckle metrology for the electronic addition of speckle patterns and the display of speckle correlation, and also for the real-time display of object motion. Factors which affect the performance in terms of the useful working range and the accuracy of displacement measurement are discussed. Some modifications to the LCTV which should increase the potential of these devices as spatial light modulators, when used in both amplitude and phase modulation, are considered briefly.     

A new reagent for polypeptide synthesis: mu-oxo-bis-(tris-(dimethylamino)-phosphonium)-bis-tetrafluoroborate.

The products 1 and 2 (X = OTs) have been isolated from the reaction between hexamethylphosphortriamide and p-toluene sulfonic anhydride and the latter converted into μ-oxo-bis-[tris-(dimethylamino)-phosphonium]-bis-tetrafluoroborate 2 (X = BF₄). This is a practical reagent for the formation of the peptide link. Where racemisation is possible via oxazolone formation this can be decreased by the addition of 1-hydroxybenzotriazole or N-hydroxysuccinimide. These additives may also increase the efficiency of condensation at glycine and proline residues.     

Estimates for the eigenvalues of the Jordan product of Hermitian matrices

Given Hermitian matrices A and B, Professor Taussky-Todd posed the problem of estimating the eigenvalues of their Jordan product AB+BA. Here we establish bounds for all the eigenvalues of the Jordan product when both A and B are positive definite. At the same time we give a more straightforward proof and an improvement of estimates given by D. W. Nicholson for the smallest eigenvalue.
